Gokarting started in the mid 1950s and was originally considered to be a fad.In the late 70s Briggs & Stratton engines started the long climb to becoming the dominant source of horsepower in American gokarting.In the 80s sanctioning bodies started to stabilize with the World Karting Association WKA east of the Mississippi River and the International Karting Federation IKF govering west of the Mississippi.Powered by a stock five horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine, gokarts can reach speeds between 35 to 80 mph.Kart Racers compete on an 18 mile oval track, some are dirt while others are paved.
