The Nürburgring has a long history dating back to the early 1920s. Created as part of a laborcreating project, the first race was held in June 1927. For many years the Nürburgring was home of the German Grand Prix Grosser Preis von Deutschland. It finally came to an end as a Grand Prix circuit in 1976 when Niki Lauda almost lost his life in a accident at Bergwerk.
